Gun mortality in the US: Who Profits?

President Donald Trump continually says that violent crime is out of control in America’s major cities. While his claims aren’t backed by data, his administration continues to cut funding for the programs and research that helped the country recover from record-high levels of shootings, and helped some of those same major cities reach record-low homicide rates. Under Trump, crucial federal funding to combat America’s gun violence crisis is drying up.

But that doesn’t mean the work to end the crisis has stopped. States, cities, and community members across the country are still taking action to reduce shootings — you just might not hear about it from most news outlets.

Enter The Trajectory, a newsletter about the people, policies, and programs grappling with America’s gun violence epidemic. Sign up to receive stories about the people and communities taking action to reduce gun violence, along with the innovative programs and policies that are making a difference. Because America’s gun violence epidemic will never abate if we focus only on the problem — we have to look at potential solutions, too.

Social policies and social programs matter and can make a difference. New York State has the fourth lowest gun mortality rate in the nation because it has some of the nation's best gun safety laws.

The Republicans are heavily supported by gun and weapons manufacturers in the United States who make money by selling guns. If you want to understand what fuels political campaigns find out who is financing them and who the candidate then is beholden to.

When it comes to gun violence you are far safer living in New York than most other states in the Union.

If we are going to solve the gun mortality problem in the United States we must address the source of the problem which is who is profiting from gun sales and who is shaping policy when it comes to gun safety.

Murder rate and life expectancy in US as compared to other developed countries

The most telling indicator of a people’s welfare is life expectancy. US life expectancy is forecast at 79.5 years for both sexes this year. This makes it 48th in the world. China’s life expectancy is forecast to be almost as high, at 78. UK and German life expectancy is 81.5, French 83.5, Italy’s 83.9 and Japan’s 84.9. Yet the US spends far more on health, relative to GDP, than any other country. This shows great wastefulness, though this low US life expectancy has a number of additional explanations. Yet, what does the high measured US GDP mean if some 17 per cent was spent on health, with such poor results? More broadly, what does US prosperity mean when combined with such potent indicators of low welfare? These outcomes are the result of high inequality, poor personal choices and crazy social ones. Some 400mn guns are apparently in circulation.

Who are preventing gun safety legislation in congress?

Here is a list of the 10 most pro-gun Congress people, according to the Gun Owners of America:

  1. Thomas Massie (R-KY)
  2. Matt Gaetz (R-FL)
  3. Paul Gosar (R-AZ)
  4. Louie Gohmert (R-TX)
  5. Jim Jordan (R-OH)
  6. Chip Roy (R-TX)
  7. Lauren Boebert (R-CO)
  8. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA)
  9. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX)
  10. Andy Biggs (R-AZ)

These members of Congress have consistently voted in favor of gun rights and against gun control measures. They have also been vocal advocates for the Second Amendment and the right of law-abiding citizens to own and carry firearms.

Notice that the 10 most pro gun congress people are Republican. They need to be voted out of office before the gun problem in the United States can reduced.

In Tennessee citizens get what they vote fore with gun violence

In Tennessee people voted for a representative who glorifies guns with his family at Christmas. Who are the people who vote for people who champion these norms and attitudes and what is the price they pay for such misguided policy decisions?

Excellent work being done in NYS legislature on gun safety measures.

If you want a change in gun policies, vote for better legislative representatives.

Gun policies will not change until we change our legislative representatives.

Be more mindful of who you vote for and encourage other people to vote for.

Mass killings reached new high in U.S. in 2019

From 10 Things you need to know today by The Week, 12/29/19
Mass killings reached new high in U.S. in 2019
A database compiled by The Associated PressUSA Today, and Northeastern University showed that there were more mass killings in the United States in 2019 than any year dating back to the 1970s despite the country's overall homicide rate dropping. In total, there were 41 mass killings — which is defined as an event in which four or more people are killed — including 33 mass shootings. More than 210 people were killed as a result of the violence. While some of the killings resounded nationally, such as mass shootings in El Paso and Odessa, Texas; Dayton, Ohio; Virginia Beach, Virginia; and Jersey City, New Jersey, many of them flew under the radar and involved people who knew each other. Editor's note:
The Republicans refuse to do anything about the gun problem in the U.S, and need to be voted out of office at all levels of government, local, state, federal. The biggest impediment to appropriate gun legislation, which the majority of Americans favor, is Mitch McConnel, the senator from Kentucky, who is the leader of the Senate of the United States. Before you vote, check on the voting record and policy positions of the candidates on gun issues.
